  • Samartha Ramdas

    A Brahmin’s younger son in Jamb, born, the story says, as a portion of Maruti, walks out of his own wedding at the priest’s call of “Savadhana”. In the forest he meets Maruti and then Rama, takes the name Ramdas, becomes the guru of King Shivaji, and gathers a company of disciples around the worship of Rama.

    1836 to 1886Bengal

    A poor Brahmin boy of Kamarpukur falls into ecstasy at the sight of cranes against a storm cloud. As a young priest of Kali at Dakshineswar he weeps for the Mother until she shows herself, goes through a nun and a naked monk to the Absolute, tries the paths of Islam and Christ, and gathers young disciples around him before his death from throat cancer.

    1879 to 1950Tamil Nadu

    A boy of Tiruchuzhi, uninterested in study, meets the fear of death at sixteen by lying still and asking what it is that dies. Weeks later he slips away to Arunachala, lives silent in the temple and the caves, is given the name Ramana Maharshi, nurses his mother until her death, and goes on living among crowds, devotees, thieves and dogs at the foot of the hill.
