An orphan of Paithan, raised by his grandparents, hears a voice in a Shiva temple and walks to Devagiri to serve the teacher Janardan. He sees Dattatreya, is sent on a long pilgrimage, comes home to marry, and spends his life feeding the hungry, reading the Bhagavata in Marathi, and meeting every insult with courtesy, while the Lord himself, the story says, serves in his house as chorus-singer and water-carrier. He ends his days by walking into the Godavari.
